About Us
Dedicated Volunteers
Whether it's a missing hiker, an injured person, a forest fire, or other
rescue scenarios, the San Dimas Mountain Rescue team is on-call 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year to help the people who visit the San Gabriel Mountains.
The San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team has rescued thousands of people from
almost every imaginable situation, and is dedicated to continuing this
service by its volunteer members...at no direct cost to the taxpayers
of Los Angeles County.
A Vital Resource
Since 1955 when Ed Rankin, founder of San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team,
saw a need for a trained, professional search and rescue team in the mountainous
wilderness at the East end of the San Gabriel Valley, a dedicated unit
of volunteers have studied, trained, and developed into an efficient and
vital resource. Each year, members of the San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team
volunteer thousands of hours to maintain the high standards developed
over the team's history.
Training
All team members continuously train to hone their skills in search and
tracking, mountaineering, climbing, rappelling, map and compass, helivac,
victim extraction, snow and ice rescues, and more.
Since the team is affiliated with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department,
each team member must also become a reserve deputy sheriff. Most team
members have also been medically trained and hold Emergency Medical Technician
certificates.
In addition to this training, members contribute a minimum of two evenings
and one weekend a month to group training, lectures, and specialized instruction.
Community Service
The San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team is comprised of highly trained and
motivated men and women who dedicate their lives to saving others in a
safe, professional, and efficient manner. These people are your neighbors
and work in a variety of full-time occupations.
In addition to being responsible for the area of Los Angeles County which
is the most active in terms of searches and rescues, the Team provides
educational programs to local schools, church groups, scout troops, civic/service
clubs, and organizations throughout California and the nation.
